How Square fees work

Square charges one processing fee per card payment, based on how the card is taken. The fee is deducted before funds reach your bank and applies to the full payment, including tax and tip. Cash and check payments recorded in Square have no processing fee.

Square Free plan processing fees for US accounts (USD)
Payment typeFee
In person (tap, dip or swipe)2.6% + $0.15
Online or invoices3.3% + $0.30
Manual entry or card on file3.5% + $0.15
Card issued outside the US+1.5%

Square Plus and Premium subscriptions have lower in-person and online rates, and larger businesses can ask Square for custom pricing. Use the custom rate option for those plans. Afterpay, ACH bank transfers and gift card loads are outside this calculator, but invoice ACH fees are covered below.

Square fees on a $100.00 payment

Example Square fees on a $100.00 card payment
Payment typeFee
In person (tap, dip or swipe)$2.75
Online or invoices$3.60
Manual entry or card on file$3.65

Keyed-in and card-on-file payments cost more because neither the card nor the cardholder needs to be present, which carries more risk.

Square invoice fees

On the Square Free plan, a card payment on a Square invoice costs 3.3% + $0.30. How your customer pays changes the fee:

Square invoice fees on a $500.00 invoice (Square Free plan)
Invoice paid byRateFee on $500.00
Card, paid online3.3% + $0.30$16.80
Card on file or entered manually3.5% + $0.15$17.65
ACH bank transfer1%, $1.00 minimum$5.00

ACH bank transfer payments deposited into a Square Checking account have no fee. For large invoices, asking clients to pay by bank transfer can save a lot — on a $500.00 invoice the difference is $11.80. Source: Square fees.

What to charge to receive $1,000.00

For an online or invoice payment at 3.3% + $0.30, charge $1,034.44 to receive $1,000.00 after the $34.44 fee.

Required payment = (desired net + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − percentage ÷ 100). If you pass fees to customers, check the card network and local rules on surcharging first.
